These prutah cornucopias coins were minted by Judean King John Hyrcanus from 135-104BC,
who was the first Judean king to mint coinage for Israel during the inter-testamental period. John
Hyrcanus I was the son of Simon and nephew of the legendary Judah (Judas) Maccabee, hero of
the Chanukah story. Towards the end of the Maccabean Revolt, the Syrian king granted Israel
the right to mint their own coinage. 1 Maccabees 15:6 "I permit you to mint your own coinage as
money for your country."
Alexander Jannaeus was the next king of Israel. It was Alexander Janneaus who minted the
widows mite lepton coins. These cornucopias coins of John Hycanus are often found intermixed
with the Jannaeus mites. The son of Alexander Jannaeus was John Hycanus II, (63-40 BC) also
minted cornucopias mites which were almost identical to those of his grandfather.
